Flora

Flora is a simple iterative algorithm conceived in 2004 that takes a base sequence of a few numbers as input and produces a musical piece as output. What is interesting about the Flora algorithm is that its music, while not exactly pop, is surprisingly harmonious and occasionally has almost emotional qualities.

The five Flora pieces presented here can be copied and distributed for non-commercial purposes under a Creative Commons License – if you so desire – provided you attribute me by name and this URL. They are named after their respective base sequences. The first three have been edited in their arrangement in that different octaves were assigned to different instruments and the intensities of instruments over time were edited. The third example utilises a modification in the algorithm that introduces rythmic pauses. The last two pieces are the direct output of the algorithm, only the (single) synth patches playing them and the tempo were customised.
